How Cold Affects Those Most Vulnerable

Cold weather has a serious impact on people who are already living in difficult conditions.

How cold affects those most vulnerable can be seen across communities facing poverty, displacement, and limited access to basic needs. Refugees, low-income families, and those without proper shelter are at the greatest risk during winter.

In countries such as Gaza, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, Yemen, and the UK, many people face winter without enough heating, clothing, or food.

Gaza, already struggling with political instability, ongoing war, and economic hardship, faces even harsher challenges when winter arrives. With limited access to basic resources such as electricity and heating fuel, families are forced to endure freezing temperatures in poorly constructed homes. The cold weather increases the risks of pneumonia and respiratory infections, especially among children and the elderly.

In the face of suffering, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasised the importance of helping those who are struggling:

“Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the Day of Judgment.” — Sahih Muslim

In Pakistan, particularly in remote and mountainous regions, winter brings harsh conditions that can be life-threatening. Snowstorms and freezing temperatures make it impossible for many families to access basic resources. Displaced families, many of whom have already lost their homes in natural disasters or conflict, find themselves unprotected from the cold.

The Qur’an highlights the importance of charity, especially towards the most vulnerable:

“The charity you give will never diminish your wealth. Rather, it will increase it in the eyes of Allah.” — Sahih Muslim

Afghanistan’s winters are extreme, with temperatures regularly dropping below -20°C in some areas. For many Afghans, the cold season brings more than just freezing temperatures. It also compounds the effects of years of war and conflict, leaving people with limited access to food, shelter, and medical care. Vulnerable groups, including displaced families and the elderly, suffer the most.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.”

Hadith, Sahih al-Bukhari

In Bangladesh, winter can be particularly harsh for the impoverished communities living in overcrowded slums. Many families reside in fragile homes made of materials that offer no insulation against the cold. The risks of pneumonia and other respiratory diseases increase as the temperatures dip.

The Qur’an reminds us:

“And in their wealth is a right for the one who asks and the one who is deprived.”

Qur’an 51:19

In Morocco, the cold season brings severe challenges to the rural communities living in the Atlas Mountains. These areas are often cut off by heavy snow and freezing temperatures. Many families in these regions live in poorly insulated homes that fail to protect them from the cold.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Allah does not look at your bodies or your appearances, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.” — Sahih Muslim

Yemen, already in the midst of a devastating conflict, faces additional challenges as the winter temperatures drop. The cold weather hits displaced families and those living in poverty the hardest, particularly in the mountainous areas where temperatures can dip below freezing.

The Qur’an teaches us about the importance of aiding those in need:

“And whoever saves one [life] – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” — Qur’an 5:32
