In the rugged mountains of Afghanistan, where snow blankets entire valleys for months, life pauses when winter arrives. For Fatima, a seven-year-old girl from Bamiyan, winter doesn’t bring joy it brings silence, hunger, and cold.

Her family lives in a single-room mud home with cracks wide enough for the wind to creep through. Her father, once a farmer, lost his land after years of drought and conflict. Now, he spends his days gathering firewood scraps to keep his children warm for one more night.

When the snow first fell this year, Fatima smiled. She stepped outside barefoot to catch the flakes in her palms. But as days turned into weeks, the beauty of snow became her family’s worst fear. Food supplies ran out, and the small fire they lit every evening barely lasted an hour.
